ODALISQUE REIMAGINED

Created during my studies at Pavillon Bosio in Monaco, this work began as an interpretation
of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres’ iconic La Grande Odalisque (1814). The original
painting became famous not only for its sensuality, but also for Ingres’ deliberate distortion
of the female body — an elongated anatomy that challenged the academic expectations of
his time.
In my interpretation, I remove the reclining body and bring the woman closer. What remains
is her face, her gaze and the sculptural form of the turban. The odalisque is no longer
observed from a distance as a body or an exotic ideal. She looks back.
This work belongs to my continuing exploration of the female figure and the inner world of
women. I am interested in the moment when a woman ceases to exist only as an image
created for someone else’s gaze and begins to reveal her own presence. Here, the historical odalisque passes through my visual language and becomes a contemporary
woman — silent, self-contained and aware of the viewer.
The painting is both a dialogue with art history and a personal reinterpretation of a
well-known female image: not a copy of Ingres, but my own encounter with his odalisque
and another step in my ongoing story about women.
